CARVED WOOD
Save the wooded texture image below and open in photoshop.

We need to define a pattern from this image to use later for a text effect so...
Image>
Duplicate>
Adjust the levels of the new image....
Image>
Adjustment>
Levels>
Set the 2nd box on Input Levels to 1.1
(do this to have the pattern
overlay brighter than the bg image later)
Ok>
To define a pattern...
CTRL+A
Edit>
Define Pattern>
Ok.
CTRL+D
You can close this image as you won't need it again. If we didn't do
this it would just look like a normal inner shadow effect and not carved.
Now
find a cool font or logo that you want to chisel into the timber. I'm
using the 'H' from the 'Transport' font available from www.dafont.com.
Create a new document, type the letter H, size 300px, any colour, as we'll be adding a pattern overlay later.

Now you can apply the following layer style settings:





with that done you should have...

Now...
Edit>
Rasterise type.
Use the eraser tool, set to brush, 1px and erase the 2 lines where the timber joins meet the harley davisdson logo.
Hold down the shift key to keep a straight line.

To get the effect on the 'scratch' text...
Type your text.
Select the Harley Davidson' logo in the layers panel.
Right Click,
Copy Layer Style
Select the 'Scratch' text layer in the layers panel.
Right Click,
Paste Layer Style
That's it. You can also save this style to use again.
